White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci refuses to stop the flow of U.S. money toward research projects in China.
The infectious disease expert made the admission during a June 16 Senate hearing he attended virtually. Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) managed to make Fauci admit this after his intense scrutiny, complete with a physical diagram.
“I don’t think I’d be able to tell you that we are going to stop funding the Chinese,” Fauci answered in response to the Republican lawmaker’s question about when will he stop funding of research in China. The head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) cited “very productive, peer-reviewed, highly regarded research projects with Chinese colleagues that have led to some major advances in biomedical research.”
Fauci’s answer followed a revelation by Marshall that the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the NIAID’s parent entity, continues to provide at least $8 million to China-based research since 2020. The senator added: “In the U.S. Intelligence Community’s 2022 Annual Threat Assessment Report, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is presented as one of the top threats to the U.S. – alongside Russia, Iran, Syria and North Korea. To my knowledge, only China is receiving U.S. research dollars.”
The NIAID director mentioned that the NIH does not recklessly release research funds to Chinese institutions. He explained: “We obviously need to be careful and make sure that when we do fund them, we have the proper peer review and we go through all the established guidelines.” According to the White House chief medical advisor, all research grants that go to other countries receive clearance from the Department of State.
But this explanation failed to mollify Marshall, who told the Epoch Times that “Dr. Fauci’s remarks proved that China is the drug he just can’t quit.”
“[He] told the truth for once, after years of repeated dishonesty that has eroded Americans’ trust in our public health institutions. In the aftermath of the [Wuhan coronavirus] COVID-19 pandemic, our government should know it’s dangerous and wrong to continue funding research projects supported by the CCP,” added the senator from Kansas.
Interestingly, Marshall’s revelation did not factor in subsequent NIH grants given to China. These funds were funneled through a third party, the EcoHealth Alliance (EHA) led by British zoologist Peter Daszak. EHA subsequently partnered with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) to conduct gain-of-function research prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on documents, the NIH gave a total of $3.1 million in grants to EHA between 2014 and 2019. Almost a fifth of that total – $599,000 – went to the WIV’s laboratory in the city of Wuhan, capital of China’s central Hubei province. Research at the lab led by the “bat woman” Dr. Shi Zhengli centered on identifying and altering bat coronaviruses deemed likely to infect humans.
Marshall pressed Fauci further, asking if he agrees that the American public does not have access to records and studies from the gain-of-function research conducted by EHA and the WIV.
“We have access to an extraordinary amount of information that has gone there,” replied the NIAID director, citing publicly-available information in scientific journals.
“Obviously, none of us know everything that’s going on in China. But if the question at hand is the rather small, peer-reviewed, high priority grant that was given from [EHA] to China in a sub-award, we have a lot of good information that’s in the publishing.” (Related: NIH contradicts Fauci, admits funding gain-of-function research at Wuhan lab.)
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Marshall’s Republican colleague, was also present in the June 16 Senate hearing. While he blasted Fauci on the issue of vaccines and boosters during the hearing, Paul had been critical of the infectious disease expert denying that the NIH was funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan.
Back in November, the senator from Kentucky called on Fauci to step down as NIAID director for misleading the American public.
“Gain-of-function [research] could cause [an] even worse pandemic next time. It could endanger civilization as we know it. Your repeated denials have worn thin and the majority of Americans, frankly, do not believe you,” Paul said.
“You appear to have learned nothing from this pandemic. I think it’s time you resign.”
