A Malaysian study investigated the synergy between Melastoma malabathricum L. (MM) and Muntingia calabura L. (MC), two medicinal herbs that were separately reported to protect the gastric system. They reported that the methanolic extract from a mixture of the two herbs (MMMC) showed potential as an anti-ulcer treatment product.
The Universiti Putra Malaysia supported this study. The findings were published in the scientific journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
The researchers concluded that MMMC protects the gastric system by modulating the endogenous antioxidant system of local stomach tissue alongside its own anti-secretory and antioxidant capabilities. The herbal medicine could be an alternative and effective therapy for gastric ulcers.
