The anti-cancer potential of Melicope ptelefolia

Researchers have discovered that Melicope ptelefolia has great potential as an anti-cancer agent. This study, which was published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, evaluated the potential medicinal applications of M. ptelefolia by looking into its different properties.

  • M. ptelefolia has been used in traditional medicine for various ailments. However, few studies have looked into the scientific rationale behind this.
  • Dried and powdered young M. ptelefolia leaves were extracted sequentially using hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water.
  • To evaluate the antioxidant activity of M. ptelefolia extracts, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2?-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals scavenging and cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) assays were conducted.
  • Anti-proliferative activity was evaluated through cell viability assay of four human cancer cell lines. These were HCC1937 and MDA-MB-231 for breast cancer, HCT116 for colorectal cancer, and HepG2 for liver cancer.
  • Cell cycle, Annexin-V/7-aminoactinomycin D staining, and measurement of activation and inhibition of caspase enzymes were also done to validate the anti-proliferative activity.

The results of the experiment show that M. ptelefolia significant antioxidant, anti-proliferative, apoptosis induction, and cancer cell cycle inhibition activities. These suggest that M. ptelefolia can potentially be used for cancer therapy.
